NASA undertook development of an emergency first responder system for the Goddard Flight Center. The system had to be capable of operating on stand-alone laptop computers and providing necessary information on building layouts and hazards to emergency response personnel.

One of the challenges of this project was making Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) available through this system. The information would have to be retrievable by clickable map, so that responders could quickly assess the hazards of a specific situation at a specific location. They were already using commercial MSDS software to store the information, but that system would not allow the data to be retrieved based on location.

The TEAMS MSDS module was installed to fulfill this requirement. The system was deployed on the emergency laptops, and responders could drill down to a specific room and retrieve MSDSs for all materials stored in that room. NASA also had a large volume of existing MSDS electronic data and a custom program was developed that would read these data and align them with the specific location information in TEAMS. This procedure minimized the cost of data entry into TEAMS. The MSDS module within TEAMS has become an integral component of NASA’s first responder system.
