Duquesne Light Company (DLC)

The deployment at Duquesne Light Company is an excellent example of the TEAMS application to the energy sector. The Environmental and Real Estate Projects group at Duquesne Light Company (DLC) was responsible for environmental compliance at 190 operating and closed facilities in the Pittsburgh area. Compliance issues at these facilities included management of underground storage tanks, monitoring and maintenance of legacy disposal facilities, NPDES permits, SPCC Plans, tracking waste shipments, and distribution of MSDSs. With a staff of five people, the group was looking for an efficient way to share information and assure that they were meeting all of their requirements.
The TEAMS Compliance, Monitoring, MSDS, and Waste Management Modules were deployed for DLC, including establishment of nearly 300 environmental compliance programs and upload of 350 historic documents.
The Compliance Module was of key interest because it allowed DLC to track the numerous deadlines associated with their facilities. Also, the online document library allowed retrieval of documents without travel to their archive facility, resulting in substantial savings of time.
The MSDS module allowed electronic distribution of MSDSs throughout the enterprise. A special MSDS user login was established to allow anyone to access the information from any of DLC’s facilities. The system was tailored to allow printing a hardcopy MSDS book for a facility (to be used as backup), and printing of hazard labels based on an MSDS.
Over a decade’s worth of historic monitoring data for a closed disposal facility were also imported into the Monitoring Module, and tailored views were developed for preparation of annual reports and statistical analyses.
The Waste Management Module was deployed to allow tracking of hazardous waste sent for off-site disposal. Manifests for outgoing shipments are logged into the system, and confirmations of acceptance are tracked.
Implementation of TEAMS has helped DLC replace a much more costly service for managing MSDSs, reduced duplication of effort by allowing everyone to tap into a central database, and improved efficiency of operations. Overall, TEAMS has allowed DLC to better manage their environmental responsibilities with fewer resources and lower cost expenditure.
